Los Llanos

Los Llanos de Aridane is located in the western valley of La Palma, between the sea and the volcanic ridge that divides the island in two. It is the most populous centre on the island, and in 2021 the eruption of the Tajogaite volcano buried part of it, destroying twelve hundred houses in eighty-five days.

In the city's main square grow majestic specimens of Indian laurel imported from Cuba at the end of the 19th century.

«Palmero» refers to people and products from La Palma. The local Canarian uses «guagua», «papa» and «ustedes», with aspiration of the final «s» in informal speech.

The Cumbre Vieja eruption covered part of the municipality in lava, and the flow is still there: those who live here live with that new landscape and with the houses that are no longer there.

The sky protected by law
In La Palma, public lighting is regulated so as not to disturb the telescopes: at night the lights are low and orange, and the stars can be seen from the centre of the town.

Bananas are the income
Plantations cover the Aridane valley and provide work for a good part of the municipality: they are harvested all year round, and the price of a bunch is a topic of conversation.

Thick cream of ground almonds, egg yolk, sugar and lemon, to be eaten with a spoon or on ice cream.

Grouper butterflied on the grill, with garlic and paprika on top.
