Comillas is on the western coast of Cantabria and was a village of fishermen and whalers until the 19th century. The Marquis of Comillas, having made his fortune in Cuba, brought Catalan modernist architects here: Gaudí built El Capricho, one of only three works he completed outside Catalonia.

«Indiano» here refers to emigrants who returned from the Americas with wealth and the houses they built. Much of Comillas's architecture can be understood through this very word.

Gaudí's «Capricho» amidst the greenery
The house with the ceramic sunflowers is one of the few works by Gaudí outside Catalonia, and it sits in a garden above the town: you pass it on the way to the beach.

The university on the hill
The huge, Modernist pontifical seminary dominates the town: it was one of the first pontifical universities in Spain, and locals in Comillas simply call it «la universidad».
The «marqueses» built everything
The first Marquis of Comillas returned from Cuba extremely wealthy and filled the town with Catalan architecture: electric light arrived here before it reached Madrid.
